Steps of Root Canal Procedure

If the phrase "root canal" makes you feel nervous, you are not alone—but dentistry has come a long way. At Cairo Smile, we want to change how you think about root canal therapy. Far from being a painful procedure, a modern root canal is actually a quick, comfortable treatment designed to relieve your pain and save your natural tooth from extraction.

With our advanced technology and expert care, we make sure your experience is smooth, painless, and highly successful.

What is a Root Canal Treatment?

To understand a root canal, it helps to know what a tooth looks like on the inside.

  • The Outside: The hard, white exterior you see is the enamel.

  • The Inside: Deep inside your tooth, beneath the hard layers, is a small space called the pulp chamber. This chamber contains the "pulp"—a soft collection of nerves, blood vessels, and tissues that helped the tooth grow when you were younger.

When a tooth suffers from deep decay, a severe crack, or trauma, bacteria can seep into this inner chamber. This causes   the pulp to become infected or inflamed. Because the infection is trapped inside a hard tooth, pressure builds up, which is what causes that intense, throbbing toothache.

A root canal treatment is simply the process of gently removing the infected pulp, thoroughly cleaning the inside of the tooth, and sealing it up to prevent future infections.

The Cairo Smile Difference: Microscope-Enhanced Endodontics

Root canal systems are incredibly tiny, complex, and filled with microscopic branches. In the past, dentists had to rely only on the naked eye and a sense of touch to navigate these tiny spaces.

At Cairo Smile, we do things differently. We perform root canal treatments using the world-class Carl Zeiss Extaro 300 Dental Microscope.

Why does this matter for you?

  • Seeing the Unseen: This advanced microscope magnifies our view up to 20 times and floods the area with specialised light. This allows our specialists to see the absolute smallest details of your tooth’s anatomy.

  • Higher Success Rates: We can locate hidden, extra, or curved canals that traditional methods might miss, ensuring the infection is entirely removed.

  • Maximum Tooth Preservation: Because we can see exactly where the infection ends and healthy tooth begins, we only remove what is absolutely necessary, keeping your natural tooth structure strong.

  • Unmatched Comfort: Greater precision means faster treatment times and less post-operative discomfort for you.

Step-by-Step: What to Expect During the Procedure

We believe in complete transparency. Here is exactly what happens during a root canal treatment at Cairo Smile:

Step 1: Making You Completely Numb

Before we begin, we apply a local anaesthetic to completely numb the tooth and the surrounding area. You will feel no pain during the procedure—most patients say it feels no different than getting a standard filling.

Step 2: Creating a Precision Access Point

We place a soft protective sheet (a rubber dam) around the tooth to keep it clean and dry. Then, a tiny opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp chamber.

Step 3: Micro-Cleaning and Disinfection

Using the Carl Zeiss Extaro 300 Microscope, our specialist meticulously removes the diseased pulp. We use specialized, flexible micro-instruments to clean, shape, and disinfect the root canals, ensuring no bacteria are left behind.

Step 4: Sealing the Canals

Once the canals are perfectly clean and sterile, they are filled and sealed with a safe, biocompatible, rubber-like material called gutta-percha. This seals the tooth from the inside out to prevent any future bacteria from entering.

Step 5: Restoring the Tooth’s Strength

The temporary opening we made is closed with a filling. Because an infected tooth loses some of its strength, we will usually recommend placing a custom-made dental crown over the tooth in a follow-up appointment. This protects the tooth from fracturing and restores its full chewing power.

Results and Outcomes: What Happens Next?

  • Immediate Relief: The main outcome of a root canal is the immediate relief from the throbbing pain caused by the infection.

  • A Natural Smile Restored: Once the final crown is placed, your tooth will look, feel, and function exactly like a natural tooth. No one will ever know you had a root canal!

  • Lifelong Durability: With proper oral hygiene (brushing twice a day, flossing, and regular checkups at Cairo Smile), a root-canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime.
