Beyond the Drill: How the Biolase Epic X Is Transforming Soft Tissue Dentistry

Our patients expect more than effective treatment — they expect comfort, speed, and minimal downtime. That's exactly what the Biolase Epic X soft tissue diode laser delivers, giving us a single, versatile instrument capable of handling a remarkable range of periodontal, surgical, and endodontic-related procedures.

At its core, the Epic X operates at a wavelength of 940 ± 10nm, delivering a maximum output power of 10 watts. This wavelength is particularly well absorbed by hemoglobin, allowing procedures to be performed in a virtually bloodless field, with the laser coagulating tissue as it cuts — a combination that translates directly into cleaner surgical sites, better visibility, and faster healing for our patients.

Here's how that translates into everyday clinical use.

Gum Depigmentation & Gum Contouring

Patients seeking a more even, aesthetic smile often deal with dark or uneven gingival pigmentation, or gum lines that don't complement their teeth. The Epic X's precise soft-tissue ablation allows for controlled removal of excess pigmentation or reshaping of the gingival margin in a single visit — with minimal bleeding and a faster recovery than traditional scalpel techniques.

Soft Tissue Crown Lengthening

Whether we are exposing more tooth structure for restorative work or improving a "gummy smile," crown lengthening demands precision. The laser's bloodless cutting action means we can sculpt tissue with excellent visualisation of the surgical field, often eliminating the need for sutures.

Pocket Disinfection (Laser Pocket Therapy)

As part of periodontal maintenance, laser-assisted pocket therapy helps reduce bacterial load within periodontal pockets, complementing scaling and root planing. This is one of the Epic X's signature hygiene-room applications, making it a valuable addition to non-surgical perio protocols.

Operculectomies

Removing inflamed operculum tissue around partially erupted teeth — especially third molars — is faster and more comfortable for patients when performed with a laser instead of a scalpel, thanks to the coagulative effect that limits bleeding and post-op discomfort.

Root Canal Disinfection (Especially in Retreatment Cases)

In endodontic re-treatment, residual bacteria in complex canal anatomy can undermine long-term success. Laser-assisted disinfection offers an adjunctive method to reduce microbial load within the canal system, supporting better outcomes when conventional irrigation alone may fall short.

Frenectomies & Tongue Ties.

From paediatric tongue-tie release to adult labial frenectomies, this is one of the most common and impactful laser procedures in our practice. The Epic X allows for quick, virtually bloodless frenectomies — often performed without local anesthesia injections in select cases — with significantly less post-operative discomfort than traditional surgical techniques.
