At Cairo Smile, we are committed to helping you achieve a healthy, confident smile. One common concern patients face is discoloration of a tooth following trauma or root canal treatmemnt. If you've noticed that a previously treated tooth has turned dark or grayish, we offer a specialized treatment known as internal bleaching or the walking bleach technique.
What is Internal/Walking Bleach?
Unlike regular teeth whitening, which works on the surface of the teeth, internal bleaching is a procedure designed to lighten teeth from the inside out. This method is most effective for teeth that have darkened due to internal staining, typically from blood or other materials trapped inside the tooth following trauma or a root canal procedure.
Why Does Discoloration Happen?
Teeth can discolour after a root canal or injury due to:
Internal bleeding:Â When a tooth is injured, blood can seep into the inner layers of the tooth, leading to a darkened appearance over time.
Dead tissue remnants:Â Following a root canal treatment, some small tissue fragments may remain within the tooth, causing discoloration.
Restorative materials:Â Certain filling materials used in root canals can also contribute to a tooth darkening over time.
These stains don't respond to regular whitening treatments, which is why internal bleaching becomes necessary.
How Does the Internal Bleaching Procedure Work?
Evaluation and Access: We begin by thoroughly evaluating the discolored tooth to ensure it is structurally sound and that the root canal treatment has been successful. Then, a small access point is made through the crown (top) of the tooth.
Placement of Bleaching Agent: Once access is gained, a specialized bleaching agent is carefully placed inside the tooth, in the empty pulp chamber. This is the area that previously housed the tooth’s nerves and blood vessels.
Temporary Seal: After placing the bleaching agent, the access point is temporarily sealed, allowing the agent to work from the inside. This is where the term "walking bleach" comes from, as the patient leaves the office with the bleach working over several days.
Follow-Up and Results: In a follow-up visit, the temporary filling is removed, and the tooth is checked for the desired whitening effect. If necessary, the process can be repeated. Once the optimal color is achieved, a final, permanent restoration is placed to seal the tooth.
Benefits of Internal/Walking Bleaching
Effective for Single-Tooth Discoloration: Unlike traditional whitening, which lightens all teeth, internal bleaching specifically targets the darkened tooth.
Minimally Invasive: This technique is conservative, requiring minimal alteration to your natural tooth structure.
Aesthetic Restoration: It can dramatically improve the appearance of a tooth without the need for a crown or veneer, preserving more of the natural tooth.
How Long Will the Results Last?
Results from internal/walking bleaching can last for several years, but it’s important to note that teeth may naturally darken over time. However, with proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, the longevity of your results can be extended.
